UIQ, or User Interface Quartz, was a graphical user interface layer built on top of the Symbian operating system, designed primarily for touchscreen and stylus-operated smartphones. Developed by UIQ Technology (a subsidiary of Symbian Ltd.), it offered customizable menus, rich visual elements, and support for third-party applications. UIQ was used in several Sony Ericsson and Motorola smartphones during the early to mid-2000s, providing advanced features like multitasking, mobile web browsing, and multimedia playback. Despite its innovation at the time, UIQ was eventually discontinued as touchscreen platforms like iOS and Android gained dominance and Symbian’s popularity declined.
