Corner House is located in the heart of Nairobi’s city centre at the junction of Mama Ngina Street and Kimathi Street. The development consists of three levels of basement parking, four podium floors containing shops, a restaurant and offices, fifteen office floors, a penthouse and caretaker’s flat on the roof.
A V-shaped tower block, with its apex set diagonally across the meeting point of Mama Ngina and Kimathi Streets, was considered the most suitable architectural form for this site. The first four floors form a podium which is recessed behind the tower at the apex to form a public plaza with a fountain, trees, flags and a sunken seating area creating a focal point around the main entrance.
Throughout the building a combination of reflective glass screen and louvres has been used to cut out sun penetration. There are four high-speed lifts, two of which serve the basement.
Located in the heart of Nairobi City, Corner House is a high rise modern building sitting at the intersection of Mama Ngina Street and Kimathi Street. The design concept was influenced by the site location and condition resulting to a V shaped tower block with its apex set diagonally across the meeting point of Mama Ngina and Kimathi Streets. The development consists of three levels of basement parking, four podium floors at the apex forming a public plaza with fountain, trees and a sunken seating area which creates a focal point around the main entrance to the building, fifteen office floors, a pent house and a caretaker’s flat on the roof. The building uses a combination of reflective glass screen and louvers to provide ventilation and cut out sun penetration and hence a cool and pleasant workspace inside. The Corner House is served by four high speed lifts, two of which start from the basement. Arcades run across the building at natural crossing points from Kaunda and Mama Ngina Streets, leading pedestrians easily into the courtyard where there is a restaurant. The 15,000 square meters building owned by the Kenya National Assurance was completed in December 1984.
