11 Best Free Movie Download Sites for 2024. Do you want to view the movie at a later time? Save it to your device so you may watch it at a later time, anywhere at any time (also known as “streaming it locally”). The allure of downloading a movie is this: It doesn’t require an internet connection and is available whenever you are.
The main problem with looking for “free movies” online, though, is that almost anything you come across will be prohibited. Since downloading anything from one of those websites is the last thing you want to do, I’ve done the legwork and searched the internet to locate the greatest, 100% legal places to get free movies. They’re waiting for you below, vetted to eliminate any dubious selections (you’re welcome, I promise). Have fun!
PublicDomainMovie.net

Public domain movies are the best option among the hundreds of websites offering free movie downloads on the internet since their legality is guaranteed. An excellent resource for these kinds of movies is PublicDomainMovie.net.
When a film is declared public domain, it indicates that everyone owns the copyright to it, not just one person. Put otherwise, you get complete legal access to watch and download the movies as often as you’d like.
Among the numerous hundreds of movies available here, you may find the dramas, horrors, comedies, and so on by using the categories that are listed along the top of the website. The movie’s cast list, synopsis, cover art, and release date are all displayed on each movie page.
I enjoy that these movies are available for online streaming from the website, so I can see what to expect before I begin the download. But not every advertisement appeals to me. Luckily, they aren’t featured in the films itself, but there are a ton of them scattered throughout.
The Public Domain Review

This webpage and the one above are extremely similar. I’ve included The Public Domain Review here for two reasons: the excellent filtering tools and the absence of advertisements, even though the majority of the films are from the same source as the collection on the preceding site.
You may specifically navigate to the films section by clicking the link below, but once there, you can further refine your search by century, genre, theme, and kind. For instance, you might be searching for films from the 20th century, or just shorts or silent films, or films with a theme related to gastronomy, architecture, or the natural world.
This entire thing is streamable. At the bottom of every page are links to download the video.

Internet Archive
Internet Archive is a treasure mine of digital data. In addition to movies, it offers software, books, web pages, and more for download. Due to its public domain status, this website, like the other two, provides free movie downloads.

The link below, which leads you to Feature Films, is just one example of the many categories where you might find movies online. Tens of thousands of free movies are available in more than a dozen languages.
I like the movie download sites above this one since there’s just too much content to sort through, even if the majority, if not all, of the movies on the previously mentioned websites are really taken from Internet Archive. Still, I enjoy using this website because of the available filters.
The Library of Congress
The Library of Congress offers movie downloads in addition. The LOC states that the goal of this selection of films is to “showcase the range and diversity of American film heritage.”
They are a selection of movies from the National Film Registry (NFR), an assembly of motion pictures chosen by the National Film Preservation Board of the United States.
There are a few things I enjoy about this movie download site: there are only a few dozen movies available, so all the options are on one page, and the website is devoid of advertisements.
The Library of Congress website offers direct downloads of these titles in MP4 and MOV formats.
Netflix
One example of a membership service that allows you to view without an internet connection is Netflix, which allows you to download its movies and TV series to a download section of the app.
This is a no-brainer option for me as a devoted Netflix subscriber when I wish to store a movie offline. If you don’t use Netflix, the selections below include a number of other, comparable choices.

Downloads are allowed from the desktop and mobile Netflix applications.
Streaming services like Netflix don’t give you the video file to save wherever you want. You can only download the movie in their approved app, which helps them control further copying or burning to discs.
YouTube
I was shocked to learn that YouTube allows users to watch movies they’ve bought or rented offline—and it’s not just for YouTube Premium users!

A movie purchased or rented on YouTube can be saved for later viewing. Simply launch the video player on your iOS or Android device, select your chosen audio track and quality, and then tap Download.
This would be at the top of the list right away if it worked for YouTube’s library of free movies!
Amazon Prime Video
You may download movies from the same screen that streams them if you have an Amazon Prime Video subscription. Movies that have been rented or bought can also be downloaded (but not the Freevee library).
The majority of movies you rent or buy with a Prime membership expire 48 hours after you download them. Movie downloads that are purchased can be kept on up to four devices; however, subscription titles can only be kept on two devices simultaneously.
It’s really simple to download movies from Amazon Prime, just like with Netflix. Just search the Prime Video app for the Download button. This is compatible with Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.
Vudu
Downloads of Vudu movies are permitted via the official mobile app. Similar to Netflix and other movie streaming services, you can only do this if you have already paid for the video.

Movies can be sorted by release date or most watched on the app. The ability to display just “Fresh” films based on Rotten Tomatoes ratings is another feature that makes using this program for movie downloads enjoyable. A genre selector is also included.
Hulu
Another subscription-based site that provides original content and full-length legal films is Hulu. This indicates that getting movie downloads through it is entirely legal.
Use the download option next to the movie you wish to save if you want to watch content offline.

My main complaint? Movie downloads are only compatible with certain Hulu (No Ads) and Hulu (No Ads) + Live TV plans, just like with these other services. Movies from premium add-ons and Live TV on-demand are not downloaded, in addition to plans that contain advertisements.
This is compatible with Android, Amazon Fire, iPhone, and iPad Hulu apps.
Disney+
Disney+ has a ton of amazing movies that I’ve seen; a lot of them would be fantastic to watch over a lengthy flight. Disney+ movie downloads are available via the mobile app. Simply click “Download” on the film’s page.
Sadly, you must be a subscription to Disney+ Premium, Disney Bundle Trio Premium, or Legacy Disney Bundle in order for this to function (i.e., paid subscribers of the Basic plans cannot download movies).
iTunes
You’ll be happy to hear that, if you use iTunes to purchase movies, you may download them by choosing Download from the iTunes Store after making your purchase. Moreover, movies can be downloaded on an iPod touch, iPad, or iPhone.
I adore how many genres are available to choose from when downloading a movie. Some of the most distinctive categories include Classics, Made for TV, Music Documentaries, Regional Indian, and Short Films; other categories include Comedies, Musicals, Westerns, Thrillers, and more.
There Are Few Legal Movie Download Sites
The list above makes it clear that there aren’t many websites that offer both free and legal movie downloads. I’m not trying less, that’s for sure. Actually, I review this list once a month to see if there are any new websites that I should add.
You’ll find a ton of possibilities if you conduct a quick Google search for “movie download site,” but it’s unlikely that any of the websites listed above will appear on the first page of the results.
For what reason is that the case? There are two causes:
The majority of websites that provide movie downloads do so unlawfully.
Really, the majority of movie download websites are only movie streaming platforms.
The most popular movie download websites frequently allow you to stream movies instead of delivering on the “download” aspect (this is the difference), but they still shouldn’t. The majority of the movies available on such websites were published this year; some are even still showing in theaters! That’s the first telltale sign that the website doesn’t follow most copyright regulations.
The movies that are acquired in this manner are nearly invariably rips of Blu-rays or DVDs; in other words, an individual is merely distributing their bought (or rented, or filmed, or pre-released) movie to the public. Most movie torrent websites operate in this manner.
You cannot keep a movie if it is not in the public domain or if the artist has not granted permission for it to be shared in this manner. Because the films on the first five sites in the above list are in the public domain, they can be downloaded for free. The other sites are free of legal risk because to agreements that the companies hosting them have with the studios that produced the films.
Consider Streaming Movies Instead
When streaming is an option, don’t restrict yourself to downloading if you don’t have to.
99% of the time, I work like this. If you think about watching movies on free movie websites instead, you have a lot more options. The movies won’t be yours to keep, but you may see them in high definition frequently and stream them straight from the websites as often as you’d like.
I suggest using a free movie watching app if you want to download a movie to watch on your phone or tablet. Packaged on a smaller screen, these are exactly the same movies that are available on free movie websites.
