Apply for Radiation Device Or Radioactive Material Import/ Export/ Transport Licence in Kenya. The most common handheld or portable instruments are: Geiger Counter, with Geiger-Mueller (GM) Tube or Probe—A GM tube is a gas-filled device that, when a high voltage is applied, creates an electrical pulse when radiation interacts with the wall or gas in the tube.

Radiation monitoring instruments are used both for area monitoring and. for individual monitoring. The instruments used for measuring radiation. levels are referred to as area survey meters (or area monitors) and the. instruments used for recording the equivalent doses received by.

Procedure

  1. To obtain a radiation device or radioactive material import/ export/ transport license, the applicant has to contact the Radiation Protection Board offices.
  2. The applicant has to make sure he or she has all the required documents that are required for this process to be successful and they can be found under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  3. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the “Fees” section of this page or in the Radiation Protection (Safety) Regulations.
  4. On completion of this process, the Board will issue the applicant a license within one month.

No person is allowed to import or cause to be imported or export or cause to be exported, any irradiating device or radioactive material except under and in accordance with a licence issued by the Radiation Protection Board.

Instructions

  • Contact Office: Radiation Protetion Board
  • Resolution Criteria: Recommendations of an assessment report by a Radiation Protection Officer
  • On receiving an application for a licence, the Board will, on payment of the prescribed fee, issue to the applicant the appropriate licence.
  • An applicant may appeal against refusal to grant a licence within one month of a notice given to him to that effect.

Need for the Document

In order to control trans boundary movement of irradiating devices and radioactive materials, combat illicit trafficking in radioactive/nuclear materials, the Radiation Protection Board requires that anybody who intends to import/ export/ transport radiation device or radioactive materials apply for a radiation device or radioactive material import/ export/ transport licence.

The Radiation Protection Board is a statutory body established under the Act of parliament, the Radiation Protection Act, Cap 243, Laws of Kenya as the national competent authority with the responsibility for protecting the health and safety of people and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. It regulates the use of ionizing radiation, exportation, importation, distribution and possession of radiation sources.

How do you monitor radiation levels?External exposure to radiation is measured with dosimeters worn on the person. These dosimeters can measure both the penetrating (whole body) dose and the shallow, non-penetrating (skin) dose to the entire body, lens of the eye and extremities (hands).
