Apply for Industrial Training in Kenya

The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) is a state corporation established under the Industrial Training (Amendment) Act of 2011. Its mandate is to promote the highest standards in the quality and efficiency of Industrial Training in Kenya and ensure an adequate supply of properly trained manpower at all levels in the industry. The Authority has its headquarters in Nairobi and  five industrial training centres spread across the country; NITA Textile Training Institute, NITA Nairobi, NITA  Kisumu, NITA Mombasa and  NITA Athi River.

The Centres host a number of industry-oriented courses targeting workers in the formal and informal sectors. The courses include short and long programmes [proficiency courses, skill upgrading courses, artisan courses, and tailor-made courses]. The Centres provide full board accommodation, training rooms, workshops and recreational facilities.

Functions of NITA

Section 3A of the industrial Training (Amendment) Act, 2011 gives the powers and functions of the Authority.

The Authority is thus responsible for:

  • Industrial training;
  • Assessing and collecting industrial training levy and fees;
  • Regulating trainers registered under section 7C of the Act;
  • Developing industrial training curricula;
  • Integrating labour market information into skills development;
  • Harmonising curricula and certificates of competence;
  • Assessing industrial training, testing occupational skills and awarding certificates including Government Trade Test certificates;
  • Equating certificates;
  • Accrediting institutions engaged in skills training for industry; and associating or collaborating with any other body or organization within or outside Kenya as the Board may consider desirable or appropriate and in furtherance of the purpose for which the Authority is established.
Procedure to Apply for Industrial Training in Kenya
  • An application must be submitted to the Director General of the National Industrial Training Authority prior to an employer sending an employee for training.
  • A copy of a National Identity card or a passport of the nominated employee should be attached to the application form.
  • The application should reach the Director General at least seven (7) for local training and fourteen (14) days for overseas training before the commencement of the course.
  • The application form should be duly completed and any changes on information given should be communicated to the Director General prior to commencement of training.
  • An employer may appeal to the Director General on a rejected application where there exists reasonable ground for such an appeal.

Eligibility

Eligibility of employers and employees

  • The employer should be registered as an Industrial Training Levy contributor and be up-todate with the monthly levy contribution.
  • Only citizens of the East African member states working in Kenya may be trained under the Industrial Training Levy Fund.
  • Only employees on whom the Industrial Training Levy is remitted shall benefit from the Industrial Training Levy Fund.

Nominated participants

  • In-house training (where all participants are from the same employer) should have not less than eight (8) and not more than twenty-five (25) participants per course session.
  • There is NO LIMIT on the number of participants undertaking in-house sensitization courses.

Training Providers

  • An Industrial Training Levy contributing employer may train staff with any public institution.
  • An employer may only train with a Private Training Provider where such a provider is registered by the National Industrial Training Authority. A list of registered private training providers is available on www.nita.go.ke
  • All persons engaged to conduct training must conform to the Guidelines for Registration and Renewal of Training Providers and adhere to the accompanying Code of Conduct available on www.nita.go.ke

Overseas Training – Apply for Industrial Training in Kenya

  • For overseas training, approvals shall only be given where such training is not locally available.
  • A nominee for overseas training should have worked for at least six (6) months in the relevant field at the nominating organization.
  • A nominee for training should travel by the most economical airfare on the route.

Industrial Training Centres (ITC’s) offers training in the following engineering trades at craft level: building, mechanical, electrical, electronics plant and automotive, refrigeration and air conditioning, boiler maintenance, refrigeration and air conditioning.

  • Technology Development Centre (TDC)

The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) is a state corporation established under the Industrial Training (Amendment) Act of 2011. The Authority has five industrial training centers spread across the country .NITA perpetuates industrial training in Kenya that dates back to 1925 when the native industrial training depots (NITDS) were introduced by the colonial Government. In 1959, Industrial training ordinance was enacted to regulate apprentice and indentured learners in industry. In 1963, the Industrial Training ordinance became the Industrial Training ACT, Cap 237 which was amended in 1971 to establish the training levy fund and the National Industrial Training council (NITC) which had Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) as its secretariat. The DIT was in 2011 successfully transformed into The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) a semi independent Government Agency with the National Industrial Training Board (NITB) replacing the National Industrial Training council.
