Amayenge is a renowned Zambian music group established by Chris Chali in 1978 in Choma. Initially known as Crossbones, the band later rebranded as the New Crossbones before ultimately becoming Amayenge. Their distinct musical style, known as kalindula, incorporates traditional African roots and has earned them recognition both locally and globally.

Chris Chali led the group until his death in 2003, at which point Fraser Chilembo took over. Amayenge’s influence is notable across southern Africa, where they’ve dominated the music scene for over two decades by embracing Zambia’s diverse cultures. Their music has resonated worldwide, from WOMAD in London to venues in Asia and the Americas.

Their extensive discography includes notable albums like Ukuilondola (1979), Amayenge (1989), Dailesit (2004), and Mangona Kulila (2005). They also featured in several compilation albums, earning recognition and awards such as the Brath Awards and the Ngoma Awards Festival.

Despite various changes in membership, Amayenge remains active, with Alice Chali leading the group in vocals and dance alongside other members. The band maintains their dedication to kalindula, a style traditionally involving unique instruments like “banjos” (mbabadoni or kalindula) and ngoma drums, now blended with modern instruments to create their distinctive sound.
