Why Smart People Borrow Money, Not Deposit It: Lessons from the Wealthy

In Africa, poverty is not just a lack of money—it’s often a cycle fueled by bad habits, poor choices, and limited access to information. But here’s the truth: you don’t need a degree to be wealthy. What you need is wisdom, strategy, and bold execution. These ten unspoken rules are used by real hustlers who rise from the trenches to wealth—without ever setting foot in a university.

1. Find a Rich Mentor and Serve Them

Wealthy people move differently. They understand things you won’t find in books or school. If you get the chance to work for one—do it. Run errands, carry their bag, fix their schedule—just stay close. Observation and service will teach you about money, decision-making, and success in ways formal education never can.

Closeness to success creates clarity of path.

2. Master the Art of Lying Low

Don’t fake a lifestyle you can’t afford. Many people stay broke trying to look rich. Avoid unnecessary attention. If you earn $500, live like you earn $100. Save and reinvest. The poor waste their rise by being loud; the wise build quietly.

When you lie low, you grow fast.

3. Understand “Under-the-Table” Business

In Africa, the biggest deals aren’t on billboards—they’re whispered over tea. Learn how informal markets and underground deals work. This is how money truly moves. If it’s already public, it’s probably too late. Learn to be early, not flashy.

The game is often off-camera.

4. Control Your Reproductive Choices

Many stay poor because they multiply dependents without multiplying income. Children are a blessing—but only if you can provide. Having more kids than your pocket can handle is financial suicide.

Never let your erection determine your direction.

5. Use Alcohol & Entertainment as a Tool, Not a Trap

The poor party to forget. The rich socialize to build. If you must drink, do it with people who can elevate your life. Go to events that add value. Entertainment should open doors, not close your wallet.

Network, don’t numb.

6. Attach Yourself to Moving Vehicles

If someone, a company, or a trend is rising, grab on! Don’t compete—collaborate. Don’t be the solo dreamer trying to build from scratch. Find someone already moving and add value to their vision.

If you can’t be the driver, be the engine.

7. Exploit Gaps in the System

There are always loopholes, programs, or overlooked needs. From free government land to untapped markets—every system has cracks. Don’t wait for fairness. Investigate. Take advantage. If you’re too “moral” to seize opportunities, someone less noble will.

The game isn’t fair—win anyway.

8. Respect & Study How Money Works

Rich people think differently about money. They see it as a seed, not a trophy. Learn budgeting, investing, compounding, and risk. Your mindset around money determines how long it stays with you.

Don’t chase money. Understand it.

9. Leverage Family & Community Ties Smartly

Being local comes with perks. Whether it’s land, free education, or insider knowledge, use your birthright. In some countries, showing your ID gives you access to free land or local grants. Don’t ignore what’s already yours.

Sometimes, your roots are your riches.

10. Develop a Ruthless Work Ethic

Hard work never goes out of style. Wake up earlier. Sleep less. Work while others relax. Build a reputation as the one who gets things done. The world pays those who solve problems fast and well.

Hustle in silence; let your results make the noise.

Final Thoughts: Poverty Is a Mindset Before It’s a Reality

The biggest difference between those who stay poor and those who rise is not always education or intelligence—it’s boldness, strategy, and execution. These ten rules are not in textbooks, but they’re used by people who rise from dust to diamonds.

If you’re willing to do what others won’t, you’ll soon live how others can’t.
Stay smart. Stay grounded. Keep climbing.
